Mars Hill College, NC My friend and riding companion for years, Tony Atkins put this great ride together. The Century leaves a little before the Metric Century. We lead out of the college but our "leading" soon ends. Charleston is well represented by Brian, Ned, Scott, Paul, Jane and MD. ![]() ![]() My friend, David, pushes me early on. David is wearing the Bicycle Inn jersey. ![]() A friend who died cycling is here. ![]() David proves to be a great descender as well as climber. This is just before the hard climb of Doggett Mountain. ![]() ![]() The beginning of the Doggett climb. The top of Doggett has a rest stop. ![]() A good time was had by all. ![]() This is between Trust and Spring Creek just past the drop off Doggett Mountain. ![]() These fun guys would catch me drop me several times before they lost a chain at the end. This was part of the descent into Hot Springs. ![]() Hot Springs ![]() You have to take it slow through Hot Springs. It's not a sleepy little town on summer weekends. ![]() Hikers, canoeists, and cyclists make it swell on a beautiful day. This would be an over-the shoulder-shot. ![]() ![]() The "Hot Springs" make it a hot destination. Cold water, thank you very much! ![]() I get a couple of lucky shots to the right. ![]() I only get tree tops to the left though. I love this area. I hadn't seen this in some time. I've ridden through all these roads while I had a bike shop in Asheville and the "Inn" in Bakersville. I have to take a couple shots sometimes. ![]() I missed a lot of shots due to usual suffering and agony. I missed a lot of shots just on Shelton Laurel. ![]() Here's the rest stop on Devil's Fork. ![]() I stated that I'd give a hundred dollars for a coke. A lady there said she would run to her house for it. I said that was very nice but I would leave without it. The "real top" of Devil's Fork and the Tennessee state line. This is topping Sam's Gap. ![]() I'd be able to get in with only the one water refuel at Devil's Fork. ![]() ![]() ![]() Tony Atkins, Joe Cowans, and friends at the finish. Tony Atkins puts on another great and beautiful ride. Tony and I came in first on a 300K ride years ago. It was on some of these very roads. As we were struggling over Walnut Mountain, I told Tony I couldn't keep his pace. Tony said over his shoulder, "we've been riding as a team and we're going to stay a team". I held on but he didn't slow it down any. These were all roads that I used to ride when I had the ProBikes bike shop in Asheville. We had great representation from Charleston. Paul Kammerer was the first finisher. He and Scott Minor are consistently at the top in every ride they do. The Low-Country VW team looked good as well with Brian Hackathorne coming in very early. Ned was way up there. Jane was definitely one of the first women. I was one of the first Vietnam Veterans, I'm pretty sure.
