Map for the 66 mile ride.

The buttons above take you to the actual maps.
The larger the monitor you're viewing on, the better.
On these pages I made the backgrounds with the "large riding area" maps.
I installed 800 pixel maps (insets) of Bamberg for each ride toward the bottoms of those pages.

The cue sheets might change depending on where the rest stops are.
Notations might be made of hazards on the roads such as dogs, etc.
There is a dog (that comes out) about a mile before Ehrhardt Road on Hunters Chapel Road.

The rest stop could be here at Hunters Chapel Road and Ehrhardt Road.

This is an either/or, not both the above rest stop and the below rest stop.
The mileage works better for the above stop.
That would place the stop at Bamberg and the stop at Hunters Chapel/ Ehrhardt Road 14.5 miles apart
and then the stop at Rivers Bridge at another 16 miles.

41.8                           Left on Hwy 601 stores after turn, REST STOP?-
This would be 20.5 miles. This is almost long for a family, couples, casual event.

I actually envisioned a stop just before the mile marker below because there is a shaded pull-over area just before the turn at Middle Place Road.
The route insectes with 301 and it is a 4 lane highway with very little traffic out here but still people monitoring the crossing might be good.
Maybe it would be better to not have tired cyclists milling around close to this intersection though.
I guess my vote would be to have the rest stop
turn below.

This is another either/or, not both the above rest stop and the below rest stop.

66.0   REST STOP? pull-over spot on the right- big trees, nice.
The mileage would be 14 from Rivers Bridge Rest Stop and 11.7 from the next Rest Stop in Bamberg.

           That’s all Folks!
This would mean that the bike ride would have 6 rest stops which is pretty good for casual riders.

The rest stop in Bamberg would be used twice by the century riders.
The rest stop in Bamberg would be used twice by the metric century riders.

The rest stop at Hunters Chapel and Ehrhardt Road  or Ehrhardt would be used once by the century riders only.

The rest stop at Rivers Bridge would be used once by the century riders only.

The rest stop at 301 or Middle Place would be used once by the century riders only.

The rest stop at Blewer and Hudson Road would/could be used once by the quarter century riders (27 milers).
The rest stop at Blewer and Hudson Road would be used once by the metric century riders (66 milers).
The rest stop at Blewer and Hudson Road would be used once by the century riders (100 milers).

I have routed the routes as they are for low traffic, scenery, and ease of navigating.
I've ridden these routes many times. I've ridden so many versions and I really like the "flow" of these.
I like right hand turns mostly but one can't always adhere to right turns only.
I usually route the rides to include the longer "ways" out with shorter rotes back.
The way I do this makes it harder to cut the course short on the return trip.
I usually take riders out through Cordova toward Cannan and then Bamberg.
The route from Bamberg is shorter using Hudson and Blewer Road as in the ""Metric".

I ride and drive the routes to get the "flow".
I'm not sure why I like some decisions except "feel".
For instance, on the metric, the Hunters Chapel road is taken after a lot of turns are made on secondary roads.
Some of these roads are bumpier and there are some turns.
I like getting on Hunters Chapel and rolling back to Bamberg on a smooth, straight road.

I like going on Carlisle and Spring Branch early on the 100 miler to break the monotony of Hunters Chapel.
I like the ride in from Govan to Bamberg.

Some considerations are made to get the mileage correct.

Below is the Metric-66 mile route.
This is in "excel" format.
Either way works.

For the long version of the hundred the cue sheet may have front and back printing to save paper.
Be careful of using print that is too small for all the old folks like me who are coming.

3 rest stops do most of the work.

3 rest stops have very light traffic. probably:
Hunters Chapel Road/Ehrhardt Road (35.8 miles) or Ehrhardt. (41.8 miles)
Rivers Bridge State Park (52 miles)
301 or Middle Place (66 miles)

1 Rest stops for the 27 miler:
one at 14.7  leaving 12.3 miles to go.

3 Rest stops for the 66 miler:
one at 21.3 miles, one at 46 miles, one at 54.2

Rest stops for the 100 miler:
one
Rest stop at 21.3, one at 35.8, one at 52, one at 66 miles, one at 77.7 miles, one at 88.

Rest stops should be next to the road to allow the riders quick access but not be in traffic.
If roads are wide enough the stops can be very close to the road it isn't a must.
Port-A-Johns should be rented for Bamberg at least and maybe Rivers Bridge State Park.
Every rest stop should have Port-A-Johns eventually if there is enough money for the expense.
Tent shelters are a must for the riders but maybe more so for rest stop workers.
Music could/should be played at the start and at some rest stops.
Except for church areas I think the rest stop workers could choose.
This again isn't a necessity but like home-made baked goods at the rest stops it could be more fun.

Most items below are on the wish list.
Some are needs, some are "wants".
Needs for the bike rides:

Police escort out of town to Cordova road perhaps.
Perhaps motorcycles leading the lead group, blocking intersections as the riders turn corners.
Escorts are more important for huge crowds.

Policemen, firemen, or helpers with neon vests should be at dangerous/busy intersections.
Left hand turns are the most dangerous for tired cyclists mixing with traffic.
Orangeburgs first few miles (to Cordova Road) are a bit dangerous,
and so are intersections of 301/Weimer and the intersection of Church/78 in Bamberg.
Busy/dangerous intersections according to century mileage:

Signs pointing to parking and bicycle rider registration at and in the Edisto Gardens.
Parking attendants/helpers to assure ample and orderly parking for everyone.

Signs warning of "Bicyclists Ahead" (handmade?) for:
301, Stonewall Jackson, Glover, Cordova Road, in Orangeburg,
78 and 301 in Bamberg, and as many as warranted.

Several Porta-Johns or bathrooms available at the start/finish.
Porta-Johns or bathrooms available at some rest stops.
Maybe 5 rest stops for the century (100) hopefully serving the metric ride as well.
One rest stop in Bamberg could be the stop twice for the century and maybe twice for the metric.
Porta-johns or bathrooms should be at rest stops.

Water barrels (dispensers). This may be an initial investment that will be of use for many years.
Water, a drink like "gatorade", bananas, maybe cookies or muffins, etc.

Cue sheets (maps).

T-shirt.

Meal afterward (?).
Orangeburg is the area for BBQ and peanuts.
The incredible peanut ride?
Orangeburgers?
Any theme might do.

Showers  (?).
At the Cherohala Challenge and Blue Ridge Brutal
had a contraption that was water coming out of pipes that could be turned on with a faucet handle.
It was in the open. Riders "hosed themselves off in the open.
This ride is being held in November so inside showers would be best.
If most riders are indeed from Charleston and Columbia showers may not be so necessary.
As the ride grows or if, initially, there are sufficient numbers, showers will be needed.

Painting arrows on the roads:
2, 3, or more arrows before some turns.
On down hills where the riders are faster,
There should be ample arrows warning about the turn in advance.
One confirmation arrow after the turn.
Arrows should be uniform in size, shape, and placement to discourage graffiti.
Arrows should not attract unwanted attention.
Warning paint could warn riders or hazards such as a dangerous curve with rocks.
These are often welcomed in the mountains and other places by bicyclists and motorcyclists.
I've painted some warnings at bad (sometimes slanted) railroad tracks.
